Cost of EV Charging Station in India

Cost of installing EV Charging Station in India

According to the Indian government, anyone can set up an electric car charging station anywhere in the country as long as it meets the regulations.
So, if you want to start an electric vehicle charging business by installing an electric vehicle charging station, all you have to do is meet the Indian government’s basic infrastructure standards and select the correct charging solution provider and location.
In this article, we will help you understand everything you need to know about ev charging stations. We will figure out the cost of installing ev charging station ro do a cost analysis of an ev charging station.

EV Chargers come in multiple configurations. The most basic EV Charger is the Level 1 charger, which charges at a slow rate. The Level 3 charger DC Fast Charger.

According to government infrastructure requirements, an EV charging station must be located within the range of every 3 kilometers in cities. A charging station for long-range and heavy-duty vehicles should be positioned every 100 kilometers on both sides of the route (mostly on Highways). India is also creating an electric high which will connect Delhi and Mumbai. The purpose of this highway is to promote clean transportation. Initially, this will be used for industrial transportation. But at present, we are far from achieving the demand because India doesn’t have enough electric vehicle charging stations.

As part of Phase 2 of the FAME scheme, the Indian government wants to build over 1000+ electric car charging stations by 2023 and has already invited ideas from corporations. Several state governments are subsidizing electric vehicle charging stations.

Working of an EV Charging Station

The process of transferring electrical power from an external source into an ev battery to charge it is known as EV charging.
A plug-in charger, which connects to a regular wall socket, is the most common type of EV charger. At its most basic level, EV charging is comparable to mobile phone charging in that it requires an electrical outlet and a charging cable. Your electric vehicle’s battery will begin to charge after you plug the charging cable into the charging outlet. When you consider the many forms of charge that are available, EV charging becomes a little more complicated.

AC-type EV charging outlets give AC power to the electric vehicle, which is then converted to DC and fed into the vehicle battery by an onboard charger installed into the vehicle. When you plug your vehicle into an AC-type charger, this process occurs automatically. Today, this is the most common way to charge an electric car and the majority of EV chargers on the market use AC power.

Before the electricity is given to the car, DC-type EV chargers convert AC power to DC within the charger. Fast charging speeds are possible because DC-type charging goes directly to the vehicle battery, eliminating the need to convert AC to DC inside the vehicle. A DC charger is not compatible with all-electric vehicles.

How much it will cost you to install or set up an EV Charging Station in India?

The cost of an ev charging station is not fixed. It can be as low as 1 lakh or can go more than 40 lakhs. This also depends on the type of chargers used. Based on a more general scenario and a supply of 250KVA EV Stations, the following is a rough estimate.

Infrastructure requirements for installing EV charging stations?

  • Transformer and subsequent substation
  • Cable supporting 33/11 KV
  • Sufficient space for EV entry, exit, and charging should be there
  • Consult with local DISCOM
  • Safety measures

How long it will take you to charge your EV?

The EV charging time depends on below mentioned factors.

  • EV charger type — The maximum charging rate (output power) of the charger you’re using will determine how long it takes your EV to charge. If your vehicle can accept a 50kW charge rate but you’re only using a 7kW charger, your car can only accept 7kW, which means it will take longer to charge than if you used a 22kW or 50kW Ev charger.
  • Vehicle battery size – The larger your vehicle’s battery pack, measured in kWh, the longer it will take to charge.
  • Vehicle battery state of charge – If your battery is just 10% charged, it will take longer to charge than if you were charging it from a half-full, 50% level of charge.
  • Your EV’s charging rate – You cannot charge your ev battery from a charger of a higher rating than the authorized charging rate. For example, if your car’s maximum charger rate is 22kW, you won’t be able to charge it faster with a 50kW charger.
  • The temperature – EV battery is based on lithium-ion. Lithium-based batteries take time to charge in cold temperatures, especially when using DC fast chargers.
