Punjab Announces Rs 300-Crore Incentive To Promote Use Of Electric Vehicles

Punjab is one of the most populous and industrialized states in India, but it also faces a serious problem of air pollution. According to a report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Punjab ranked 11th among the 28 states and eight union territories in terms of annual average PM2.5 concentration in 2020. PM2.5 are fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause various health issues.

To tackle this challenge, the state government has recently announced a new policy to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The policy, which was approved by the cabinet on June 22, 2023, aims to provide incentives worth around Rs 300 crore in the next three years to promote the use of EVs in various segments such as two-wheelers, e-cycles, e-rickshaws, e-autos, and electric light commercial vehicles.

The policy also envisages creating a dedicated EV fund to facilitate initiatives for the development of charging infrastructure, awareness campaigns, skill development, and research and innovation in the EV sector. The policy also mandates that all new government vehicles will be electric by 2026 and that at least 25% of all vehicles registered in the state will be electric by 2030.

The policy is expected to have multiple benefits for the state and its people. It will help in reducing the carbon footprint and improving the air quality of the state. It will also help in saving foreign exchange by reducing the import of crude oil. It will also create new employment opportunities and boost the local manufacturing industry.

The policy has been welcomed by various stakeholders, such as EV manufacturers, dealers, consumers, and environmentalists. They have expressed their hope that the policy will create a conducive environment for the growth of the EV market in Punjab and make it a leader in the green mobility revolution in India.
