GreenCell Mobility, an electric mobility services company backed by Eversource Capital, has raised ₹330 crore in fresh equity funding from Impact Fund Denmark to accelerate the expansion of its electric bus fleet across India. The investment will support the deployment of approximately 4,500 electric buses and strengthen the company’s position in the country’s growing electric public transportation sector.

The Mumbai-based company aims to expand its fleet to more than 5,000 electric buses operating across 105 cities. The planned deployment is expected to take place over the next six to eight quarters, according to company management.

The ₹330 crore investment will provide GreenCell Mobility with additional capital to execute its existing order book and expand operations. The company intends to strengthen service delivery, operational efficiency and reliability as it scales its electric bus network.

Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GreenCell Mobility, said the investment would provide greater financial flexibility to accelerate expansion plans while maintaining service quality and customer experience.

The funding comes at a time when electric buses are gaining importance in India’s efforts to modernise public transportation, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and address urban air pollution.

Founded in 2019, GreenCell Mobility focuses on deploying and operating electric buses for both intra-city and intercity transportation. Rather than manufacturing vehicles itself, the company sources buses through contract manufacturing arrangements with vehicle suppliers and operates them across different transport networks.

The company primarily operates its intercity electric bus services under the NueGo brand. Its business also includes electric mobility-as-a-service solutions and charging infrastructure to support fleet operations.

GreenCell has reported operating more than 1,200 electric buses in India. Its existing network includes approximately 900 buses serving intra-city routes, around 300 buses under the NueGo intercity brand, and 50 buses associated with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The company also operates more than 270 charging stations to support its electric fleet.

Expanding the fleet beyond 5,000 buses would significantly increase its operational reach and support the growing demand for electric public transport services across multiple cities.

Impact Fund Denmark’s investment highlights the growing interest of institutional investors in India’s electric mobility infrastructure. The fund, previously known as IFU, is backing the expansion of a business focused on scaling cleaner transportation solutions.

GreenCell Mobility also has support from Eversource Capital, a joint venture between Everstone Capital and Lightsource. Other investors associated with the company include the International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII) and Tata Capital.

Earlier, the company secured funding from IFC and other institutional investors to support its expansion plans. These investments reflect the significant capital requirements involved in purchasing electric buses, developing charging networks and managing large-scale transportation operations.

The planned expansion could contribute to the wider adoption of electric buses in India’s public transportation system. Electric buses can help reduce tailpipe emissions and noise pollution while offering transport operators an alternative to conventional diesel-powered fleets.

However, large-scale deployment also requires reliable charging infrastructure, effective fleet management, maintenance capabilities and commercially sustainable operating models.

GreenCell Mobility’s latest funding round demonstrates how private investment can support these requirements alongside vehicle deployment. As the company works towards its target of more than 5,000 electric buses across 105 cities, its progress will be an important development to watch in India’s transition towards cleaner public transportation.
