Hinduja Group to Invest Rs 2,500 Crore to Expand EV and Mobility Footprint in Tamil Nadu

What Happened:
The Hinduja Group has announced a ₹2,500 crore investment in Tamil Nadu. The plan covers electric buses, EV charging, digital mobility and clean energy projects.

The Key Number:
₹2,500 crore — the group’s fresh investment commitment for Tamil Nadu.

Why It Matters:
The investment links electric mobility with charging and renewable power. It also expands the group’s existing EV and automotive presence in the state.

The Hinduja Group Tamil Nadu EV investment will support electric buses, charging infrastructure, digital mobility services and automotive engineering. Its e-mobility arm, OHM Global Mobility, plans to operationalise electric buses for public transport across Tamil Nadu.

The move builds on a wider investment push by the group in Tamil Nadu. In September 2025, the Hinduja Group signed a ₹7,500 crore agreement with the state for EV ecosystem projects, including battery manufacturing, energy storage and charging infrastructure. Ashok Leyland is also developing a ₹500 crore battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai.

The new commitment also connects mobility with electricity generation. Hinduja Renewables plans to develop more than 200 MW of solar, wind and battery projects across Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai and Coimbatore. This could give the group’s growing electric mobility operations a larger clean-energy base within the state.

  • Investment: ₹2,500 crore commitment in Tamil Nadu.
  • Electric Buses: OHM Global Mobility will operationalise electric buses for public transport.
  • Charging: The plan includes expansion of battery charging infrastructure.
  • Clean Energy: Hinduja Renewables plans more than 200 MW of solar, wind and battery projects.
  • Project Locations: Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai and Coimbatore are among the identified areas.
  • Digital Mobility: The group will explore digital mobility solutions and related services.
  • Automotive: The investment also covers opportunities in automotive engineering.
  • Earlier Commitment: The latest plan follows a ₹7,500 crore EV ecosystem agreement signed in September 2025.
  • Battery Manufacturing: Ashok Leyland is developing a ₹500 crore battery pack facility at Pillaipakkam.

The Hinduja Group Tamil Nadu EV investment could strengthen several parts of India’s commercial EV ecosystem at the same time. The focus is not limited to electric vehicles. It includes buses, charging infrastructure, digital mobility and renewable power.

For public transport, more electric buses can support the shift away from diesel-powered fleets. However, bus electrification also needs reliable charging and strong fleet operations. The group’s plan to expand charging infrastructure alongside electric mobility addresses part of that requirement.

The renewable energy component is also important. More than 200 MW of planned solar, wind and battery projects could support the wider clean-energy ecosystem around the group’s mobility operations. The projects are planned across several Tamil Nadu districts, creating potential links between clean power generation and electric transport.

For Indian OEMs and suppliers, the investment can create demand across batteries, charging equipment, engineering and digital fleet services. It also reinforces Tamil Nadu’s position as a major automotive and EV manufacturing hub. The combination of manufacturing, electric buses, batteries, charging and renewable power could help build a more integrated EV supply chain in the state.

The Hinduja Group Tamil Nadu EV investment marks another step in the group’s wider electrification strategy. The key developments to watch will be the rollout of electric buses, charging projects and the planned 200 MW-plus clean-energy capacity. The success of the ₹2,500 crore commitment will ultimately depend on how quickly these projects move from MoUs and plans to operational assets.
