Škoda Auto and JSW Green Mobility Limited have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to explore a strategic automotive joint venture in India, potentially creating a partnership spanning electric vehicles, internal combustion vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
The Skoda Volkswagen JSW partnership is still at an exploratory stage, with no definitive agreement, investment amount or final ownership structure announced. If negotiations progress, the proposed venture would develop, manufacture and sell passenger vehicles for both the Indian and export markets.
The significance lies in the scope. This is not being discussed as an EV-only partnership, but as a broader manufacturing and product alliance that could influence Volkswagen Group’s future product strategy in India.
Joint Venture Would Cover EVs, ICE, Hybrids and PHEVs
According to the companies, the proposed venture would cover multiple propulsion technologies including battery-electric vehicles, internal combustion engines, hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Škoda Auto currently leads Volkswagen Group’s operations in India through Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, which manages the Group’s Indian automotive activities.
Under the proposed structure, the two partners would operate the venture under joint control, with defined responsibilities and decision-making mechanisms. However, neither company has disclosed the eventual shareholding structure.
Earlier reports had indicated that structures including a 51:49 arrangement with JSW as the majority stakeholder were being evaluated, but that ownership model has not been officially confirmed.
Localisation Could Be the Most Important Part of the Deal
One of the main objectives of the Skoda Volkswagen JSW partnership is deeper localisation.
The companies said the collaboration would focus on expanding the product portfolio while strengthening manufacturing and R&D capabilities in India. Higher local sourcing and platform sharing could reduce vehicle costs, improve scale and strengthen profitability.
This could become particularly important for Volkswagen Group’s future electric vehicles.
Autocar Professional reports that potential JSW investment could support vehicles based on the proposed India Main Platform, an electric architecture expected to be adapted from Volkswagen Group’s China Main Platform for Indian regulations, suppliers and local sourcing requirements.
Such a platform could eventually underpin electric SUVs for both Škoda and Volkswagen.
JSW Brings Manufacturing Scale to the Equation
For Volkswagen Group, JSW brings an increasingly large automotive manufacturing footprint and access to a wider industrial ecosystem.
JSW has already committed up to approximately ₹25,000 crore over five years through its automotive businesses to build an electric mobility ecosystem spanning vehicles, batteries, charging infrastructure and related technologies.
The two sides are also reportedly evaluating the use of existing JSW manufacturing assets. Greater localisation of products such as the Škoda Kodiaq has been examined, although these product plans remain unconfirmed.
Exports Are Also Part of the Plan
The proposed venture is intended to serve markets beyond India.
Volkswagen Group has increasingly positioned India as a manufacturing and export base for neighbouring and international markets. A deeper partnership with JSW could give the Group additional scale while spreading development and manufacturing investment across larger production volumes.
