India’s electric two-wheeler market has recorded strong growth in the first half of the financial year 2027, with sales crossing 11 lakh units between April and September 2026. According to industry data reported by Autocar India, electric two-wheeler deliveries reached approximately 11.2 lakh units during this period, marking a significant 76% increase compared with the 6.40 lakh units sold in the corresponding period last year.
The growing popularity of electric scooters and motorcycles reflects increasing consumer interest in affordable, convenient and environmentally friendly mobility solutions. With a wider range of models entering the market and established manufacturers strengthening their electric vehicle portfolios, the segment is emerging as a major contributor to India’s electric mobility transition.
September 2026 Records Highest-Ever Monthly Sales
September 2026 emerged as a landmark month for the electric two-wheeler industry. Sales reached approximately 2.07 lakh units, representing an increase of around 89% compared with September 2025. This was the highest monthly sales figure recorded by the segment at the time, highlighting the accelerating adoption of electric two-wheelers across the country.
The strong monthly performance also reflects the increasing availability of electric scooters across different price categories. Consumers now have more choices, ranging from affordable commuter scooters to premium electric models offering improved performance, technology and features.
The approaching festive season could provide an additional boost to demand as manufacturers and dealerships seek to attract buyers through new products, promotional offers and improved retail networks.
TVS and Bajaj Continue to Lead the Market
TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto maintained their positions as the leading electric two-wheeler manufacturers during the first half of FY2027.
TVS recorded approximately 2.90 lakh units in retail sales between April and September, securing around 26% of the market. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important to the company’s scooter business, with electric models accounting for a growing share of its overall sales.
Bajaj Auto followed with approximately 2.53 lakh units and a market share of around 23%. Its Chetak electric scooter range continues to strengthen the company’s presence in the electric mobility segment.
Ather Energy secured the third position with approximately 1.79 lakh units sold during the six-month period, representing around 16% of the market. The company has continued to expand its customer base through its electric scooter portfolio and technology-focused offerings.
Vida Gains Momentum as River and Bounce Expand
Hero MotoCorp’s electric vehicle brand, Vida, delivered approximately 1.23 lakh units in the first half of FY2027, registering 107% year-on-year growth. Its September performance also reached a new monthly high, indicating increasing demand for its electric scooter range.
Ola Electric retained fifth place, with approximately 8% market share, although its share declined from 17% in the corresponding period last year. Greaves Electric Mobility, which manufactures Ampere electric scooters, recorded 53,733 units during the period.
Electric two-wheeler startups also demonstrated encouraging progress. River sold 29,074 units during the first half, increasing its market share to approximately 3%. Bounce recorded 8,772 units, while Simple Energy reported 8,668 units, reflecting growing competition among emerging manufacturers.
Outlook for India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Industry
India’s electric two-wheeler segment is now a major driver of the country’s EV market, accounting for approximately 62% of total electric vehicle sales across categories during April–September 2026. The segment includes around 200 players, although a relatively small group of established manufacturers commands most of the sales.
With first-half sales growing by 76% and September setting a new monthly record, the industry is expected to maintain its growth momentum. Autocar India reports a projected total of approximately 22.6 lakh electric two-wheeler sales for FY2027.
Continued improvements in product availability, charging access, battery technology and consumer awareness will be important in sustaining this momentum. If demand remains strong through the festive season and the following months, FY2027 could become another significant year for India’s electric two-wheeler industry.
For India’s EV sector, the latest sales figures signal a maturing market in which established manufacturers and emerging brands are competing to make electric mobility more accessible to everyday commuters.
