BorgWarner Collaborates with BYD’s FinDreams Battery to Manufacture LFP Blade Cells Locally for Commercial Vehicles

In a landmark move poised to reshape the landscape of electric vehicle battery manufacturing, BorgWarner has sealed a pivotal strategic agreement with FinDreams Battery, a renowned subsidiary of the global electric vehicle giant, BYD Company.

This partnership earmarks BorgWarner as the sole non-OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) localised producer, independent of FinDreams Battery, vested with exclusive rights to localize Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery packs for commercial vehicles. This initiative leverages the cutting-edge blade cells technology developed by FinDreams Battery, setting a new precedent in the industry for the regions of Europe, the Americas, and selected territories within the Asia Pacific over an impressive span of eight years.

The essence of this collaboration extends beyond mere manufacturing rights. BorgWarner is poised to harness blade cells from FinDreams Battery for the assembly of LFP battery packs across the stipulated geographies. Moreover, this agreement encapsulates an intellectual property license transfer from FinDreams Battery to BorgWarner, empowering the latter with proprietary insights into battery pack design and manufacturing processes. This strategic exchange underscores a shared vision for innovation and sustainability in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector.

“The lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry is an exciting technology that is becoming increasingly important globally due to its cost competitiveness. We have seen increased demand from our customers for packs with LFP cells. We believe FinDreams Battery is right for BorgWarner in this area, with its 20-plus years of experience and success in LFP batteries for the mobility sector across China and Europe.”

Frédéric Lissalde, the President and CEO of BorgWarner, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the burgeoning global demand for LFP cell technology.

“At the key timing of complicated geopolitics and starting point of lithium ion phosphate electrification for overseas commercial vehicles, the overseas localisation cooperation with BorgWarner on battery packs using FDB blade cells in the territory takes the advantages of each other’s strengths, provides diversified and flexible options for overseas customers, and also offers extra access to localised battery packs using FDB blade cells for overseas customers. Devoted to the vision of ‘let people use batteries carefree’, FDB will cooperate with BorgWarner to make joint efforts for the speedy electrification of the overseas commercial vehicle market.”

Micheal He, President & CEO, FinDreams Battery said.

This partnership not only signifies a significant step forward for both BorgWarner and FinDreams Battery but also heralds a new era of innovation and sustainability in electric vehicle technology. As these two industry titans join forces, the promise of accelerated electrification in the commercial vehicle sector becomes increasingly tangible, paving the way for a greener, more efficient future in global transportation.
