India’s electric commercial vehicle sector is set to receive a major boost as Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) and Sorigin Green Mobility Private Limited have joined hands to deploy 500 electric heavy commercial vehicles (e-HCVs) across the country over the next two years. The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks in cargo transportation, port operations and industrial logistics.
The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce electric heavy-duty trucks across key freight corridors in India. The initiative will initially focus on cargo-intensive routes, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) ecosystem, where high vehicle utilisation and efficient transportation are essential for logistics operations.
Under the agreement, EIM will supply its Ashwa 55-tonne electric tractors along with the supporting energy infrastructure required for large-scale electric truck operations. The proposed deployment will include charging infrastructure, battery-swapping networks and energy-management solutions to ensure efficient fleet operations.
Initial Deployment of 18 Electric Trucks at JNPA
The implementation of the partnership is expected to begin immediately, with the first phase involving the deployment of 18 electric heavy commercial vehicles within the JNPA ecosystem.
The initial deployment will establish a foundation for expanding electric trucking operations across other major freight and industrial transportation routes. Ports and logistics hubs are considered suitable locations for electric heavy commercial vehicles because of their regular cargo movement and predictable operating patterns.
EIM’s Ashwa electric tractors are designed for heavy-duty transportation requirements, particularly in applications involving container movement and industrial logistics. By combining electric vehicles with dedicated energy infrastructure, the partnership aims to address important operational challenges such as vehicle turnaround time, energy expenses and fleet utilisation.
According to EIM Managing Director Narendra Murkumbi, the collaboration will bring together electric heavy-duty vehicles, charging infrastructure, battery-swapping capabilities and energy-management solutions. He also highlighted that Sorigin Green Mobility is already an existing customer of EIM, providing an operational foundation for the planned expansion.
Sorigin to Handle Fleet Financing and Operations
Under the partnership, Sorigin Green Mobility will take responsibility for fleet financing, vehicle deployment, daily operations and maintenance. The company’s business model is designed to make electric trucking accessible to logistics operators without requiring them to invest heavily in purchasing electric vehicles.
Instead of making substantial upfront investments in electric trucks, customers can use a service-based transportation model in which payments are linked to the freight moved.
Sorigin Director Gautam Rekhi and Co-Founder Aarav Tanti stated that the company would manage the complete operational requirements of the electric truck fleet.
The company already operates EIM electric tractors at Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Tuticorin Container Terminal. These existing operations provide practical experience that can support the expansion of electric trucking services.
Focus on Sustainable Heavy-Duty Transportation
Sorigin operates as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-agnostic electric trucking platform, providing integrated transportation solutions for ports and heavy industries. Its services include electric trucks, trailers, trained drivers, on-site supervision, vehicle maintenance and uptime management.
The company also provides connected-fleet solutions such as vehicle tracking and emissions reporting. Charging requirements are supported through battery-swapping arrangements or dedicated on-site charging infrastructure, depending on operational needs.
The planned deployment of 500 electric heavy commercial vehicles represents an important step towards reducing dependence on diesel-powered trucks in India’s freight transportation sector.
By combining EIM’s electric vehicle technology with Sorigin’s fleet management and financing capabilities, the partnership aims to make electric heavy-duty transportation more practical and commercially viable.
As India’s logistics industry increasingly focuses on cost efficiency and lower-emission transportation, this initiative could encourage wider adoption of electric trucks across ports, industrial facilities and major freight corridors.
