A Quantum Leap in Energy Storage from IIT Bombay

A Quantum Leap in Energy Storage

Professor Amartya Mukhopadhyay from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has been recognized with the prestigious Tata Transformation Prize 2024 for his groundbreaking work in developing advanced sodium-ion battery technology. This innovative solution holds the potential to revolutionize the energy storage industry.

A Sustainable Future, Powered by Innovation

Mukhopadhyay’s research focuses on addressing the limitations of lithium-ion batteries, particularly their high cost and limited temperature range. His team has successfully developed air- and water-stable sodium-transition metal oxide cathodes and alloy-based anodes, resulting in a battery prototype that is approximately 30% cheaper and more durable than its lithium-ion counterparts.

A Global Recognition

The Tata Transformation Prize, a joint initiative by Tata Sons and the New York Academy of Sciences, aims to recognize and support innovative technologies that address India’s most pressing challenges. Mukhopadhyay’s selection as a winner underscores the global significance of his research and its potential to contribute to a more sustainable future.
