Alstom Unveils LEAP Initiative to Enhance Sustainable Last-Mile Connectivity in Bengaluru

Alstom, a well-known proponent of intelligent and environmentally friendly transportation, has introduced the Low Emission Access to Public Transportation (LEAP) program as a component of its CSR campaign.

The objective of LEAP is to improve last-mile connectivity and encourage increased use of public transportation. During the program’s trial phase, electric autorickshaws are made available from Bengaluru’s Namma Metro stations in Indiranagar and Yelachenahalli via MetroRide, an AI-powered EV ride-hailing service.

About twenty-five women have received training from MetroRide to drive the electric rickshaws in the area, in an effort to promote inclusivity in urban transportation. The MetroRide app is used to book the journeys.

Along with dignitaries, WRI India, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, and Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, attended the program’s launch. Olivier Loison stressed the role of LEAP in advancing sustainable mobility and the importance of Namma Metro in tackling Bengaluru’s traffic issues.

Bengaluru, which is renowned for its clogged roads and high rate of private vehicle ownership, has a difficult time offering last-mile connectivity to its urban population. By enhancing women’s access to Bengaluru Metro and promoting their involvement as drivers, LEAP seeks to close this disparity and promote inclusivity in the transportation industry.

The program aimed at empowering women and encouraging sustainable mobility options was highly praised by Prof. Rajeev Gowda, Vice Chairman of the State Institute for the Transformation of Karnataka. WRI India’s Mr. Srinivas Alavilli emphasized the program’s dedication to data-driven decision-making as well as its socioeconomic benefits, especially with regard to the empowerment of female driver-partners.

To guarantee LEAP’s efficacy, WRI India is involved in polling commuters and arranging dialogues with both commuters and drivers. Alstom’s dedication to sustainability is further evidenced by its collaboration with NRSCEL, the incubation center of IIM Bangalore, on projects like the Sustainability Incubation Program.

In order to boost metro ridership by connecting to high-frequency hubs and accelerating the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions throughout India, LEAP is prepared to extend to other metro stations.
