CM Kumaraswamy Reviews EV Charging Grid Expansion Under PM E-Drive to Boost Clean Mobility, Energy Security & Sustainable Growth in India
Union Minister for Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, has initiated a strategic push to accelerate India’s EV charging infrastructure under the ambitious PM E-Drive scheme, aiming to position India as a global leader in green mobility. Chairing a high-level inter-ministerial meeting, Kumaraswamy brought together senior officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Road Transport and Highways, and Heavy Industries to review progress and align efforts for faster execution.
The PM E-Drive initiative, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to build a robust, accessible EV ecosystem to promote clean transport, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and catalyze India’s transition to sustainable mobility.
PM E-Drive: ₹10,900 Crore Boost for EV Adoption
Approved in September 2024, the ₹10,900 crore scheme aims to accelerate electric vehicle adoption over two years. The plan includes upfront purchase incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-buses, and emerging EV categories, along with the rollout of 72,000 public charging stations across the country.
Kumaraswamy emphasized the long-term vision behind the initiative:
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is on the path to becoming a global model for sustainable transport. We are not just building infrastructure; we are building the foundation for energy security and green economic growth.”
BHEL May Spearhead Unified EV Super App
As part of the implementation roadmap, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is being considered as the nodal agency for demand aggregation and technology integration. A nationwide EV super app is under discussion, aimed at streamlining the EV user experience.
The proposed app would integrate real-time slot booking, charger availability, payment gateways, and progress tracking — offering EV users a single digital platform to access India’s expanding charging network. BHEL will also collaborate with central ministries and state governments to assess charging proposals and oversee installations.
Mission Convergence for Green Mobility
Kumaraswamy underscored the importance of coordinated governance in driving the EV agenda forward:
“The clean energy transition cannot succeed in isolation. This meeting reflects our commitment to unified governance. With ministries, PSUs, and states aligned, the PM E-Drive will create new industries, generate green jobs, and deliver seamless electric mobility for every Indian.”The ministry has reiterated its commitment to collaborative federalism, working across departments and sectors to build an EV-ready India by 2030, in line with the government’s clean transport targets.
