Rivian Secures $827 Million Incentive Package from Illinois to Expand Operations for R2 SUV Production
Rivian Automotive has received a substantial boost in its quest to reshape the electric vehicle (EV) landscape. Today, the company unveiled an impressive $827 million incentive package from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity. This injection of funds will power Rivian’s expansion efforts at its manufacturing plant in Normal, IL.
The generous funding will be directed towards key initiatives, including facility expansion, infrastructure improvements, and comprehensive job training programs tailored to Rivian’s workforce. These efforts will lay the groundwork for Rivian’s upcoming production of the eagerly awaited R2 midsize SUV.
RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s Founder and CEO, expressed gratitude for the state’s investment, recognizing its crucial role in accelerating the market debut of the R2. Scaringe praised the leadership of Governor Pritzker, President Harmon, and Speaker Welch for their instrumental roles in facilitating this partnership. He emphasized Rivian’s commitment to fostering a close relationship and contributing to shared success.
Governor JB Pritzker hailed the progress towards establishing Illinois as a leader in the EV market. He emphasized the partnership with Rivian’s significance in driving job creation, community development, and progress towards climate goals. Pritzker noted that each dollar invested represents a victory for Illinois’ hardworking population and a step towards sustainable growth.
In March, Rivian announced the start of R2 SUV production at its Normal facility. The R2 offers exceptional performance, capability, and utility in a five-seat configuration designed for adventures and daily commutes. This vehicle is built on a robust platform that will also underpin future Rivian models. Meanwhile, the Normal plant continues to produce Rivian’s flagship models – the R1S and R1T – as well as commercial electric delivery vehicles.
Since its establishment in 2021, Rivian’s Normal facility has been a hub of EV production, manufacturing over 100,000 electric vehicles. The company’s substantial investment of over $2 billion in Normal underscores its commitment to the local economy. Rivian’s presence has also spurred significant economic development, with a value add of over $3.9 billion in just three years.
With Rivian’s transformative journey fueled by Illinois’ support, the future of sustainable mobility shines brighter than ever.
