“Bengaluru–Pune Highway Leads with 60 EV Charging Stations, 49 Now Commissioned for E-Mobility Boost”

BENGALURU: A total of 149 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have been installed along four major highways connecting Bengaluru to other key cities, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, responding to a query from Bangalore Central MP P.C. Mohan, stated that the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway currently has 26 charging stations installed, of which four are commissioned.

Karnataka to Set Up 70 EV Charging Stations Along State and National Highways

The Bengaluru–Pune Highway (NH 48) leads in numbers, with 60 stations installed and 49 operational, while the Bengaluru–Hyderabad Highway (NH 44) has 41 installed and 23 commissioned. The Bengaluru–Mysuru Highway (NH 275) has 22 installed, with 11 operational.

In total, 236 charging stations have been set up across these corridors, with 149 installed and 87 commissioned, highlighting the government’s efforts to strengthen EV infrastructure along intercity routes.

The minister added that the union government has not yet conducted a comprehensive assessment of EV readiness nationwide. However, the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser and its partners have performed an EV readiness evaluation for dedicated corridors, aimed at supporting zero-emission truck deployment.

The findings were released in the report titled “India’s Priority Corridors for Zero Emission Trucking” on May 9, 2025, which identified ten priority corridors, including the Bengaluru–Chennai route, for early deployment of electric trucks.

This move underscores India’s ongoing push toward zero-emission mobility and expanding the EV charging ecosystem along critical transport corridors.

Author’s Comment:

The recent installation of 149 EV charging stations along Bengaluru’s major highways marks a significant step in strengthening India’s e-mobility infrastructure.

With strategic corridors like Bengaluru–Chennai and Bengaluru–Pune seeing operational stations, the initiative not only supports passenger EVs but also lays the groundwork for future zero-emission trucking, reflecting the country’s commitment to a cleaner, sustainable transport future.
