India-Made 2KW DC Portable Charger to Encourage EV Adoption

The IIT Madras Research Park’s Centre of Excellence made a 2KW DC portable charger to encourage people to use electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras, Smt. Sunita Verma, GC (R&DE), Secretary of MeitY, and other important people from MeitY and IIT Madras were at the launch.

“The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India Make for the World’ can be achieved with developing more and more indigenization of technology and taking it forward by the industry. Now, India has moved from importing Nation to exporting Nation, this type of innovation and synergy will make India a ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’,” said Krishnan.

The Secretary added that Design in India will give impetus to home-grown IP and will help accelerate the start-up ecosystem in the country. “IITM Research Park is now an internationally recognized brand. The Park is vibrant and effervescent constantly innovating and promoting new initiatives. The new 2KW EV charger designed in the Park and using recycled material is an important step forward. MeitY is very proud of being associated with this venture,” he said.

This launch is a big step to help MeitY’s goal of making more people use EVs in India and reducing the need to buy charging solutions from other countries. Right now, most of the portable chargers that OEMs use are bought from other countries and come with fixed settings. They cannot be changed according to the voltage and current needs. The chargers also need to have a good design to work properly in different temperatures and conditions. This shows why it is important to make chargers in India for the growth of EVs in India.

To solve this problem and increase local production, CEET, IIT Madras and Flowtrik Technologies have designed and developed the 2KW charger with MeitY’s funding. These chargers have more than 95% efficiency and can work well at up to 50°C. They also have features to protect them from over-load, over-voltage, reverse polarity, and EMI/EMC filter.
