The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has proposed installing three electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at key locations in the city to strengthen public charging infrastructure and encourage the adoption of electric mobility. The initiative aims to improve charging accessibility for EV owners while supporting efforts to reduce vehicular emissions across the National Capital Region (NCR).
The civic body is currently awaiting approval from the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), which has been asked to examine the proposed locations and issue a No-Objection Certificate (NOC). Installation work is expected to move forward once the necessary clearance is received.
Three EV Charging Stations Proposed in Sectors 29 and 34
According to the proposal, two charging stations will be established in Sector 29, while the third is planned for Sector 34. These locations have been selected to provide convenient charging access in commercial areas that attract regular public movement.
The three proposed locations include:
- Sector 29 Market: A charging station is planned within the market area to serve visitors and EV owners.
- Near Lemon Tree Parking, Sector 29: The second station is proposed near the parking area close to Lemon Tree.
- Near Marble Market, Sector 34: The third charging station is planned near the marble market in Sector 34.
Each charging station will require approximately 100 square metres of land, measuring around 12.5 metres by eight metres. The proposed layout will accommodate five equivalent car spaces (ECS) at each location, allowing vehicles to access designated charging and parking facilities.
The sites are currently awaiting HSVP’s approval, as the identified land parcels fall under its jurisdiction.
CESL to Support Charging Infrastructure Development
The MCG plans to facilitate the installation of these charging stations in collaboration with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a public-sector enterprise involved in developing sustainable energy and electric mobility solutions.
The initiative forms part of the city’s broader efforts to improve EV charging accessibility and support the implementation of the Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) action plan for reducing vehicular pollution across the NCR.
In a letter dated October 16, the MCG commissioner requested HSVP to examine the proposed sites and issue the required NOC to enable the project to proceed.
A senior HSVP official confirmed that the proposal was under consideration by the competent authority. The installation timeline will depend on the approval process and subsequent implementation steps.
Public Charging Access to Support EV Adoption
The proposed charging stations could make charging more convenient for electric car owners visiting busy commercial areas in Gurugram. Access to charging facilities near markets and parking spaces can help EV users integrate charging into their daily routines rather than making separate trips to dedicated charging locations.
Expanding public charging infrastructure is particularly important as electric vehicles gain popularity across India. While EV adoption depends on several factors, including vehicle prices, driving range and operating costs, the availability of reliable charging facilities remains an important consideration for prospective buyers.
For cities such as Gurugram, which experience substantial daily traffic, developing accessible charging networks can also support the gradual transition towards cleaner transportation.
Part of Gurugram’s Broader Clean Mobility Push
The three proposed charging stations represent another step towards strengthening Gurugram’s EV infrastructure. The initiative aligns with wider efforts to reduce dependence on conventional petrol and diesel vehicles and promote cleaner mobility solutions across the NCR.
However, the project remains at the approval stage, and the three locations will require the necessary clearance before installation can begin.
Once the NOC is granted, the MCG will be able to advance the proposed installations in coordination with CESL and the relevant authorities.
The development highlights the importance of collaboration between municipal bodies and land-owning agencies in expanding public EV charging infrastructure. As Gurugram continues to explore cleaner transport solutions, the successful implementation of such projects could help improve charging accessibility and support the city’s long-term electric mobility goals.
