India is charging ahead in the electric vehicle (EV) sector with its latest breakthrough — the development of an indigenous wireless EV charger. With over 45 lakh electric vehicles already registered nationwide, the government is now focused on strengthening the EV charging infrastructure through innovation and localization.

The cutting-edge wireless charging technology has been jointly developed by C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram and VNIT Nagpur. This charger is designed to wirelessly charge 90% of an EV battery in just three hours, offering convenience and efficiency without the clutter of cables.

  • Power Output: 1.5 kW
  • Power Supply: 230V, 50 Hz AC, single-phase
  • Battery Supported: 4.8 kWh onboard pack at 48 volts, 30 amperes
  • Charging Time: ~90% in 3 hours
  • Safety Features: Short-circuit & open-circuit protection
  • Technology Used: Silicon carbide-based MO SFETs operating at 88 kHz

In April 2025, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officially transferred the wireless charging technology to M/s Global Business Solution Pvt. Ltd. for commercial rollout. The move is expected to accelerate the integration of this innovation into India’s growing EV ecosystem.

At the Electronics Niketan in New Delhi, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan announced the signing of several Technology Transfer Agreements (ToT/MoA/MoU) under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) to support the commercialisation of indigenous technologies.

The government is backing EV innovation through several schemes and incentives:

  • PM E-DRIVE Scheme – promoting EV manufacturing and R&D
  • PSM Scheme – addressing adoption challenges
  • GST Reduction – slashed from 12% to 5% on EVs for affordability

The indigenous wireless charger is not just a technological advancement — it’s a symbol of India’s growing capabilities in EV innovation. With this development, the nation moves one step closer to building a self-reliant, sustainable, and future-ready electric mobility ecosystem.
