India’s EV Revolution Accelerates: Maharashtra Poised to Become the Country’s Largest EV Manufacturing Hub

In a landmark development for India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, Tesla officially entered the Indian market with the inauguration of its first Experience Centre in Mumbai. The event, led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, marked a pivotal moment in the country’s clean mobility journey.

“Maharashtra will become the state with the highest EV manufacturing capacity in India,” declared CM Fadnavis, affirming the government’s commitment to positioning the state as the epicentre of India’s EV ecosystem.


Tesla Makes Its Indian Debut

  • Tesla’s first Experience Centre in India was inaugurated in Mumbai, with the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaiya, Principal Secretary/CEO Kaustubh Dhavse, and senior Tesla officials.
  • The centre is not just for showcasing vehicles, but also functions as a delivery hub, logistics base, and service facility.
  • Bookings for Tesla vehicles in India have officially commenced.

Launch of Tesla Model Y in India

  • Tesla introduced its bestselling Model Y in the Indian market.
  • Key highlights of the Model Y include:
    • Up to 600 km range on a single charge
    • 15-minute rapid charging capability
    • Zero emissions
    • Globally renowned safety features

“This is a momentous occasion for India,” said Fadnavis. “The world’s smartest electric car has arrived, with strong backing from the Union government.”


Government Support and EV Policy Initiatives

  • Maharashtra’s proactive EV policy is driving this transformation with:
    • Special incentives for EV manufacturing
    • Tax exemptions
    • Boosted investment in charging infrastructure
  • EV infrastructure is rapidly expanding, with:
    • Four large EV charging hubs and
    • 32 public charging stations coming up in Mumbai
  • Tesla services will soon be launched in two additional major Indian cities, extending its footprint nationwide.

India’s EV sector is gaining global attention, with Maharashtra setting an example through strategic policy support, infrastructure investment, and international partnerships. Tesla’s entry is expected to catalyze widespread EV adoption, setting the tone for India’s transition to a cleaner, greener future.
