In a significant boost to India’s electric mobility infrastructure, the government has installed 4,557 public EV charging stations (PCSs) along state highways, national highways, and expressways covering a cumulative distance of 146,342 kilometers, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament on Wednesday.

According to data shared in the Rajya Sabha, Uttar Pradesh leads the charge with 507 EV charging stations, followed by Karnataka (489), Maharashtra (459), Tamil Nadu (456), and Rajasthan (424).

The information was compiled by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and highlights India’s growing emphasis on sustainable transport and EV infrastructure development. However, the minister clarified that no specific incentives are currently being offered to Charging Point Operators (CPOs).

In addition to highway infrastructure, 4,625 EV public charging stations are operational across tier-2 cities as of April 1, 2025, further supporting regional EV adoption beyond metro areas.

PM E-Drive Scheme Targets 72,000 New Charging Stations

The central government is stepping up efforts to address EV charging availability with the PM E-DRIVE scheme, launched in October 2024. With a financial outlay of ₹2,000 crore, the scheme aims to fund the installation of approximately 72,000 public EV charging stations across India.

These chargers will be strategically deployed along 50 key National Highway corridors and placed at high-traffic zones such as metro cities, toll plazas, airports, railway stations, state highways, and fuel outlets, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The broader E-Drive scheme also includes a budget of ₹10,900 crore for demand-side incentives to promote electric vehicle purchases, including private, commercial, and fleet segments.

FAME-II Supports Oil Companies in Charging Infrastructure

Under the ongoing FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme, the government has earmarked ₹873.50 crore to support the installation of 8,932 public charging stations by India’s three major Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL).

This initiative is designed to utilize the existing network and land access of fuel retailers to deploy EV charging infrastructure more efficiently.

New Incentives for E-Trucks Announced

In a further push to electrify the commercial vehicle segment, the government has introduced financial incentives for electric trucks (e-trucks) under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. Announced earlier this month, the scheme offers a maximum subsidy of ₹9.6 lakh per e-truck, aimed at encouraging fleet operators and logistics companies to transition toward cleaner alternatives.

A Nationwide Charging Ecosystem in the Making

With multiple parallel efforts underway—from highway electrification to urban deployment and commercial fleet incentives—India is rapidly building the groundwork for a robust nationwide EV charging ecosystem. As vehicle adoption gains momentum, infrastructure rollout remains a key focus area for achieving the country’s clean mobility and climate goals.
