Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) multi-level electric bus depot at Hari Nagar, calling it a milestone in the capital’s shift toward sustainable urban transport.

The ₹420-crore project is expected to be completed in 24 months. Once operational, the depot will accommodate nearly 400 electric buses and feature 81 advanced charging stations capable of powering vehicles within 40 minutes.

Addressing the gathering on the first day of Navratri under the Sewa Pakhwada initiative, Gupta said, “This project is not just a bus depot – it is the foundation of a greener, more efficient Delhi. With this facility, our government reaffirms its commitment to clean, sustainable mobility.”

Multi-Level Depot with Commercial Integration

The upcoming depot will cover 7.4 lakh sq. ft. and incorporate nearly 2 lakh sq. ft. of retail and commercial space, making it a self-sustaining financial model. It will also include:

  • 324 car parking slots and 104 two-wheeler spaces
  • Modern DTC offices and dormitories
  • A commercial hub for revenue generation

Green and Sustainable Features

The project will integrate several eco-friendly measures, including:

  • A 500 KW rooftop solar plant
  • A 170 KLD sewage treatment facility
  • Rainwater harvesting systems
  • A GRIHA 3-star sustainability rating

Boosting Delhi’s E-Bus Capacity

According to Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, the depot will expand capacity from 230 CNG buses to 384 electric buses, supported by a 33 KV electrical sub-station.

Chief Minister Gupta added that the Delhi government plans to double its electric bus fleet from 3,000 to 6,000 by next year, alongside a comprehensive EV policy that integrates e-buses, metro connectivity, and last-mile solutions.

Highlighting the contrast with past administrations, Gupta stated, “Where past governments neglected the lifeline of Delhi, we are reviving it. Our vision is not just to repair what was broken, but to build future-ready systems.”

Positioning Delhi as a Global Leader

Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood emphasized that the project would position Delhi as a frontrunner in global electric mobility, setting a benchmark for other Indian cities.

With this ambitious depot, Delhi aims to strengthen its public transport infrastructure while accelerating the transition toward clean, green, and future-ready urban mobility.
