EU and India Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Innovations in EV Battery Recycling
On Tuesday, the European Union and India jointly initiated an Expression of Interest (EoI) targeted at startups that specialize in EV battery recycling. This collaboration falls under the broader scope of the India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC), which was established in New Delhi on April 25, 2022. The primary aim is to foster partnerships between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups across Europe and India in the arena of sustainable technologies.
The EoI serves as a conduit for Indian and European startups and SMEs to present their cutting-edge solutions in EV battery recycling technologies. A total of twelve innovators—six from each region—will be allowed to pitch their ideas at a Matchmaking Event scheduled for June 2024.
This pitching session is intended to select six finalists, three from each region, who will then have the opportunity to travel to either India or the EU. This will allow them to explore potential business opportunities, enhance customer engagements, and secure funding prospects.
The overarching objectives of this initiative include the identification and support of enterprises striving to innovate within the battery recycling sector. It aims to strengthen the circular economy for rare materials and expedite the transition towards carbon neutrality in both regions.
Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, India’s Principal Scientific Adviser, affirmed the commitment to enhancing cooperation with EU innovators. He stressed the importance of sustainable practices and innovative advancements in propelling the industry forward.
Similarly, Mr. Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, underscored the critical role of collaborative efforts in the EV battery recycling market. He encouraged EU innovators to capitalize on this opportunity for potential partnerships with Indian entities.
Interested startups and SMEs from both India and the EU are encouraged to submit their Expressions of Interest by the deadline of April 30, 2024. This initiative not only aims to enhance technological collaborations but also to facilitate the mutual growth of the participating regions towards sustainable industrial practices.
