In a major push to strengthen India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop Kanpur as a key EV manufacturing hub. As part of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision 2030, the state will invest ₹500 crore to establish a state-of-the-art EV park near Bhimsen, strategically located along the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC).

The project will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and executed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA).

“The initiative aims to position Kanpur as a key player in India’s EV ecosystem by bolstering the local supply chain and encouraging indigenous manufacturing,” the government said in an official statement.

Spread across 500 acres, the EV park will cater to the entire electric vehicle manufacturing value chain—including:

  • Electric motor and chassis production
  • Steel component fabrication
  • Lithium-ion cell manufacturing
  • Battery assembly and charging systems
  • Controllers and other critical electronic parts

A dedicated Research & Development (R&D) center will be a major highlight of the project, designed to drive EV innovation and accelerate the development of advanced technologies. The state envisions the center playing a dual role in supporting regional industrial growth and contributing to global EV research.

To ensure inclusive industrial development, the park will also feature an integrated EV components cluster, designed to empower SMEs, startups, and local entrepreneurs. This cluster is expected to drive innovation at the grassroots level and create a resilient EV supply chain within the state.

Officials emphasized that the park’s proximity to the DFC offers a logistical advantage, making it easier to move raw materials and finished products efficiently. The park will be connected via robust rail and road networks, ensuring faster and cost-effective transportation.

The government anticipates that the project will:

  • Create thousands of employment opportunities
  • Stimulate entrepreneurship and industrial growth
  • Play a crucial role in decarbonizing India’s transport sector
  • As EV adoption continues to grow across India, Kanpur’s transformation into an EV manufacturing hub could serve as a model for sustainable industrial development, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s position in the national green mobility mission.
