In a landmark move that places Kerala at the forefront of India’s green mobility transition, the state has unveiled India’s first Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology demonstration along with a unified EV charging app and solar-powered energy solutions.
The announcement was made at a high-profile event held at ANERT Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, led by the Honourable Minister of Electricity, Sri K. Krishnan Kutty, and supported by key state and national energy authorities.
India’s First V2G Tech Pilot: EVs as Mobile Energy Assets
One of the event’s most significant milestones was India’s first successful demonstration of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. Developed in collaboration with the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) and with technical guidance from the University of Delaware, the V2G pilot used modified Tata Nexon EVs to enable two-way energy flow between electric vehicles and the power grid.
By turning EVs into mobile energy storage units, V2G can help stabilize power demand and enhance grid resilience. According to ISGF President Reji Kumar Pillai, “This V2G project sets a national benchmark for integrating EVs into smart grid systems and empowers consumers to actively participate in energy management.”
EZ4EV: Kerala’s Unified EV Charging App Goes Live
To complement the physical EV infrastructure, ANERT launched EZ4EV, Kerala’s first universal EV charging mobile app, built entirely in-house. The app offers:
- Real-time charger availability
- Tariff-based billing
- Route-based travel planning
- Seamless access to 18 public EV charging stations statewide
- Zero third-party service charges
This digital platform is designed to offer EV users a frictionless and transparent charging experience, bringing digital convenience to clean mobility.
Customer Lounge & Solar Storage: Elevating EV Ecosystem Experience
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Kerala also unveiled a dedicated EV customer lounge at ANERT HQ, featuring Wi-Fi, refreshments, AC, news access, and clean restrooms—offering comfort and utility during charging downtimes.
The state also introduced Kerala’s first grid-interactive, solar-powered Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 100 kW/150 kWh capacity. This system will support round-the-clock renewable power supply, reduce diesel generator dependence, and integrate smart energy management systems (EMS and BMS).
Driving a Future-Ready EV and Energy Landscape
These initiatives are being driven under the leadership of K.R. Jyothilal IAS (ACS, Finance) and Puneet Kumar IAS (Additional Chief Secretary, Power Department), aligning with Kerala’s vision to build a green, digitally connected energy and transport infrastructure.
With this comprehensive rollout—covering V2G tech, public charging, solar energy, and customer experience—Kerala positions itself as a national model for clean mobility innovation.
