India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is on a trajectory of exponential growth. Valued at approximately USD 8.49 billion in 2024, the market is projected to reach USD 113.99 billion by 2029, driven by government initiatives, rising environmental awareness, and technological advancements.

However, this rapid expansion brings to light critical challenges, notably in the domestic manufacturing of essential components like MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors). India’s reliance on imported semiconductors, particularly from countries like Taiwan, underscores the need for strategic collaborations to bolster the local supply chain.

Silicongear Corporation, a Taiwanese semiconductor design company, has been instrumental in addressing these challenges. Since initiating operations in India in 2024, with a distributor based in Delhi, Silicongear has provided high-quality MOSFETs tailored for EV applications.

Their Super-Junction (SJ) technology offers lower RDS(on), faster switching speeds, and reduced switching losses compared to traditional planar MOSFETs. These features enhance thermal efficiency and reliability, crucial for EV chargers and Battery Management Systems (BMS). Additionally, their Double Gate (DG) series, such as the DG100N02Q, is optimized for compact applications like e-scooter BMS units.

Global semiconductor shortages continue to challenge the industry. Silicongear addresses this with a dual-pronged approach: building local distribution partnerships in India (currently active in Delhi) and implementing proactive forecast planning with OEMs to reserve production slots ahead of time.

Looking ahead, Silicongear is investing in the development of Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, targeting a voltage range of 600V to 3300V. These new entries are designed to withstand harsher environments and may meet automotive-grade standards, extending their utility to a broader range of EV systems.

Silicongear is actively seeking partnerships with Indian companies to co-develop non-automotive-grade EV products like e-bike BMS units and controllers. While they currently focus on non-certified applications, their reliability is backed by rigorous 1000-hour high-temperature tests and integrated ESD protection in many product lines.

With technical support, evaluation samples, and fast-response collaboration through their local distributor, Silicongear is positioning itself as more than a component supplier—they’re becoming a critical enabler for Indian EV manufacturers developing in-house systems.

Silicongear’s engagement in India exemplifies the potential of international collaborations to bridge technological gaps. By offering advanced semiconductor solutions and actively partnering with Indian firms, Silicongear is a critical enabler of India’s EV innovation ecosystem.

As India continues to invest in semiconductor infrastructure and deepen ties with global leaders like Taiwan, the synergy between international expertise and domestic ambition will be crucial to shaping a sustainable, self-reliant future for Indian mobility.
