Battery Aadhaar Enables End-to-End Traceability with Secure Digital IDs, Capturing Manufacturer Info, Usage History & Material Composition
In a major step toward sustainable and transparent electric mobility, Tata Elxsi has unveiled ‘Battery Aadhaar’, a digital identity framework for batteries that enables complete lifecycle traceability, at the Battery Summit 2025 hosted by the World Resources Institute (WRI) India.
The innovative solution is part of a larger consortium effort that includes Tata Motors, Tata AutoComp Systems, IIT Kharagpur, WRI India, LOHUM Cleantech, NUNAM Technologies, and Oorja Energy. It is supported by the UNEP-led programme ‘Electrifying Mobility in Cities’, coordinated by NITI Aayog and the Department of Science & Technology.
What Is Battery Aadhaar?
Battery Aadhaar gives each battery a secure digital identity, capturing critical data such as manufacturer details, usage patterns, material composition, and recycling history. This ensures traceability across the entire battery value chain—from raw material sourcing to second-life applications and eventual recycling. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce unsafe battery reuse, improve compliance with environmental regulations, and promote circular economy practices.
Powered by MOBIUS Platform
The solution is built on Tata Elxsi’s MOBIUS+ platform, which leverages blockchain technology to offer secure data flow, digital product passports, and automated regulatory compliance. The platform enables:
- Real-time battery health monitoring and residual life prediction
- Lifecycle mapping and chain-of-custody tracking
- Role-based dashboards for stakeholders including OEMs, recyclers, and regulators
- QR code access to live battery data for field-level transparency
Speaking on the occasion, Anil Radhakrishnan, Chief Product Officer at Tata Elxsi, said:
“Battery Aadhaar and the MOBIUS+ platform are key enablers of India’s clean mobility vision. By combining traceability with digital transparency, we’re supporting a sustainable, scalable ecosystem that aligns with both national and global regulatory frameworks.”
Global and Local Compliance Ready
The platform is designed to align with India’s evolving EV and battery policies and is adaptable to meet international regulations including the EU Battery Regulation and upcoming standards in Japan and North America. As India pushes for green mobility and circular energy systems, initiatives like Battery Aadhaar are expected to play a critical role in ensuring safe, sustainable, and transparent battery management across the EV ecosystem.
