Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is exploring opportunities to expand its presence in India’s electric passenger vehicle market. The company has filed a design patent for the facelifted VinFast VF5 electric vehicle in India, indicating a possible entry into the country’s competitive affordable electric SUV segment.
The updated model features several exterior design changes and expected interior improvements. With an estimated starting price of around ₹12 lakh (ex-showroom), the VF5 facelift could compete with popular electric vehicles such as the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.
Although VinFast has not officially confirmed the India launch, the design patent filing and sightings of the updated model in Vietnam suggest that the company could be considering the vehicle for the Indian market. A potential launch in 2027 is being anticipated, but the timeline remains unconfirmed.
VinFast VF5 Facelift: Exterior Design Changes
The facelifted VinFast VF5 receives multiple styling updates that give the electric vehicle a more contemporary appearance. The front fascia features redesigned headlights positioned lower than those on the existing international model. The bonnet and front bumper have also been revised, while the black trim beneath the headlights has been reduced for a cleaner look.
The side profile largely retains the existing model’s overall silhouette. However, the updated vehicle features redesigned alloy wheels, with overseas sightings indicating that the wheel size could remain at 16 inches.
At the rear, the electric vehicle features redesigned connected LED taillights. The reverse lamps and turn indicators, previously positioned lower in the bumper, are expected to be integrated into the updated taillight assembly. The tailgate features centrally positioned VinFast lettering and a VF5 badge on the right.
These changes aim to give the electric SUV a refreshed appearance without significantly altering its overall proportions.
Updated Interior and Infotainment Features
The facelift is also expected to introduce improvements to the cabin. Images of the updated vehicle spotted overseas indicate a redesigned dashboard featuring a larger freestanding infotainment touchscreen.
Other expected changes include a new two-spoke steering wheel with flattened upper and lower sections and a revised centre console. The rotary gear selector and two cupholders appear to have been retained.
One notable change is the apparent absence of a separate digital instrument cluster. Instead, driving information could be displayed through the central infotainment screen.
The updated model may also receive leatherette seat upholstery, replacing the fabric seats offered in the existing Vietnamese-spec version. However, the final interior configuration and feature list for India have not been announced.
VinFast VF5 Battery, Motor and Driving Range
The existing VinFast VF5 is available internationally with different battery and motor configurations, depending on the market. These specifications provide an indication of what the manufacturer could potentially offer in India.
The 29.6 kWh battery version produces approximately 90 hp and 135 Nm of torque. It offers a claimed driving range of 268 km under the NEDC testing cycle.
Another international version features a larger 37.23 kWh battery pack paired with a 136 hp electric motor producing 135 Nm of torque. This configuration delivers a claimed NEDC range of 326 km.
Both configurations use a front-wheel-drive layout.
However, these figures relate to existing international versions and are not confirmed specifications for the facelifted India-spec model. Battery capacity, charging capabilities, motor output and certified driving range will depend on the configuration selected for India.
Expected Price and Competition in India
The VinFast VF5 facelift is expected to carry a starting price of approximately ₹12 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it in the affordable electric SUV segment.
At this price point, the vehicle could compete with the Tata Punch EV and potentially overlap with selected variants of the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.
Its competitiveness will depend on the battery configuration, driving range, equipment levels and ownership costs offered to Indian customers.
India Launch Timeline and Market Outlook
VinFast has not officially announced the launch date or pricing of the VF5 facelift in India. However, the design patent and overseas sightings suggest that the company is evaluating the model for a possible market introduction, with 2027 being discussed as a potential launch window.
If introduced, the VF5 could expand VinFast’s Indian portfolio and provide customers with another option in the affordable electric vehicle segment.
The model’s success will depend on competitive pricing, practical driving range, warranty coverage and a reliable after-sales service network. These factors are particularly important in a market where established manufacturers already have a strong presence.
For now, the VinFast VF5 facelift remains a potential addition to India’s electric vehicle market rather than a confirmed launch. Its final specifications and pricing will determine whether it can emerge as a serious competitor in the country’s growing electric SUV segment.
