Reliance Industries ramps up its new energy push with a 10 GWp solar giga factory scaling to 20 GWp, 40 GWh battery capacity targeting 100 GWh, and an integrated manufacturing approach.
New Delhi: Reliance Industries Ltd has accelerated its push into the new energy sector, with major progress across solar manufacturing, battery production and large-scale renewable power generation. According to the company’s latest earnings update, the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate is on track to commission its fully integrated solar manufacturing giga factory while simultaneously advancing battery and energy storage facilities.
Solar Manufacturing Giga Factory Takes Shape
Reliance is progressing rapidly on its solar manufacturing giga factory, which is being developed with an initial annual capacity of 10 gigawatt peak (GWp). The company plans to scale this up to 20 GWp per year in the next phase. The solar module manufacturing unit has already been commissioned, marking a key milestone in Reliance’s clean energy roadmap.
In addition, the solar cell manufacturing unit based on heterojunction (HJT) technology was commissioned last quarter and is currently being ramped up to full capacity. The HJT cells produced at the facility are among the largest utility-scale solar cells globally and offer industry-leading efficiency, enabling Reliance to compete with global solar majors on both technology and scale.
| Solar Manufacturing Status | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial Capacity | 10 GWp annually |
| Planned Scale-up | 20 GWp annually |
| Module Manufacturing | Commissioned |
| HJT Cell Manufacturing | Commissioned, ramping up |
| Technology Focus | Heterojunction (HJT) cells |
Upstream Integration Underway
To strengthen its end-to-end manufacturing ecosystem, Reliance has also commissioned a pilot line for ingots and wafers, a critical upstream component of the solar value chain. The company plans to bring the full giga factory online in phases over the course of the year.
Construction of polysilicon and solar glass facilities is also underway and is expected to be completed within the year. Once operational, these units will further reduce dependence on imports and enhance domestic value addition in solar manufacturing.
Battery and Energy Storage Expansion
Alongside solar, Reliance is building Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and battery cell manufacturing giga factories with a combined planned capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually. Construction is progressing at pace, with commissioning scheduled in phases during the year.
| Battery Manufacturing Plans | Capacity / Status |
|---|---|
| Initial Combined Capacity | 40 GWh annually |
| Future Scale-up Target | 100 GWh annually |
| Construction Status | In full swing |
| Equipment Status | All critical production line equipment received |
The company said all critical production line equipment has already been received at the site. Over time, Reliance aims to scale up its battery manufacturing capacity to 100 GWh per year, positioning itself as a major player in energy storage solutions.
Mega Renewable Project in Gujarat
On the power generation side, Reliance is developing one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects in Kutch, Gujarat. Land development, engineering works, site infrastructure and transmission systems are progressing simultaneously, with key contracts either awarded or nearing finalisation.
The aggressive build-out highlights Reliance’s strategy to become a fully integrated clean energy company spanning manufacturing, storage and generation, as it positions itself for long-term growth amid the global energy transition.
