In a major infrastructure push aligned with India’s electric vehicle ambitions, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced two new six-lane expressways from Agra to Gwalior and Agra to Aligarh. Both expressways will be EV-ready, featuring dedicated charging stations, food plazas, and fuel/CNG pumps, aimed at supporting the growing demand for electric mobility across India.
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Gets a Boost
With EV adoption accelerating nationwide, NHAI is stepping up efforts to build EV-friendly highways. After installing EV chargers on the Lucknow Expressway, the authority will now integrate similar infrastructure along the upcoming Gwalior and Aligarh expressways, both originating from Agra.
Facilities to Support EV Travelers
The new expressways will include:
- One to two petrol and CNG stations on each side
- Dedicated food plazas offering vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals
- Separate restroom facilities for men and women
- EV charging points capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously, with a charging time of 15 to 20 minutes per vehicle
These additions aim to make long-distance EV travel more practical and convenient for both personal and commercial use.
Gwalior Expressway: Faster Travel, Better Connectivity
The 88 km Agra-Gwalior expressway, estimated to cost ₹4,200 crore, will feature a hanging bridge over the Chambal River.
- Construction is set to begin in October 2025
- Completion is expected within 24 months
- Travel time will reduce to just 90 minutes, down from the current 2 to 2.5 hours
The expressway will also link directly to Agra’s inner ring road, offering better access to key highways such as the Yamuna Expressway, Lucknow Expressway, and NH-19.
Aligarh Expressway: Strengthening Regional Access
The second project, the 64 km Khandauli–Aligarh expressway, will be built at a cost of ₹3,400 crore.
- Construction will begin in phases from October
- The route will connect to the Yamuna Expressway, improving access to Aligarh and Hathras
Initial development will focus on the Khandauli to Teedi Bagiya Chauraha stretch, which will be widened and connected to Rambagh Chauraha via a new elevated road. This upgrade is expected to ease congestion and enhance urban traffic flow.
Towards an EV-Ready Highway Network
With these new additions, NHAI is taking concrete steps to build a nationwide EV-ready expressway network. The integration of charging points and commuter facilities into new highway projects reflects a shift toward sustainable mobility, supporting India’s EV targets under FAME and state-level policies.
These expressways are not just about reducing travel time—they represent a future where electric vehicles can travel long distances without compromise.
