PM Modi to Inaugurate Maruti Suzuki EV & Battery Plant in Gujarat; eVitara SUV to Serve India and 100 Global Markets
New Delhi: India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is set to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market in a major way. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the company’s all-new electric car manufacturing unit and a lithium-ion battery production facility in Gujarat tomorrow.
The move marks a significant step not only for Maruti Suzuki but also for India’s EV ecosystem, as the facility will produce the highly anticipated e Vitara electric SUV and its advanced battery packs for domestic use and export.
Made in India, for the World
The e Vitara will be manufactured entirely in India and exported to over 100 countries worldwide, strengthening India’s position as a global EV hub. Alongside the SUV, the lithium-ion battery packs developed at the new plant will also support Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid vehicles.
Company executives confirmed that the project aligns with India’s “Make in India” vision by reducing reliance on imported EV components and expanding the country’s capacity to produce next-generation electric powertrains.
Battery and Range Options
Globally, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will be offered with two battery pack choices — 49 kWh and 61 kWh.
- Single-motor variant:
- 49 kWh pack: WLTP range of 346 km
- 61 kWh pack: WLTP range of 428 km
- 49 kWh pack: WLTP range of 346 km
- Dual-motor variant:
- 61 kWh pack: WLTP range of 412 km
- 61 kWh pack: WLTP range of 412 km
- These specifications are expected to remain similar for the India-spec model, though final figures may be adapted to local testing standards.
Premium Features on Offer
Inside, the e Vitara features a dual-tone brown-and-black cabin with a fresh two-spoke steering wheel. The SUV is equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and leatherette upholstery.
Key highlights include:
- Ventilated front seats and 10-way adjustable driver’s seat
- Sliding and reclining rear seats
- Fixed glass roof
- 7 airbags for safety
- Level-2 ADAS driver assistance technology
- 360-degree camera and ambient lighting
- Ride-by-wire system with wireless charging pad and keyless entry
This feature set places the e Vitara among the most advanced mass-market EVs expected in India.
Bold Exterior Styling
The e Vitara adopts three-point matrix LED daytime running lights integrated into sleek headlights, piano-black detailing, and a reworked LED taillight cluster. 18-inch alloy wheels, strong C-pillars, and Nexa branding on the rear windshield reinforce its premium positioning.
Expected Pricing and Competition
Industry sources indicate the e Vitara could launch at an expected starting price of around ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom).
Once on sale, it will compete directly with:
- Mahindra BE.06
- Hyundai Creta Electric
- MG ZS EV
- And other mid-size electric SUVs arriving by 2025.
- This will be Maruti Suzuki’s first full-scale entry into India’s electric passenger vehicle segment — a market currently dominated by Tata Motors and fast emerging players like MG Motor and Mahindra Electric.
Strategic Leap for India’s EV Goals
The inauguration of Maruti Suzuki’s new EV and battery plant is a strategic boost to India’s push for localized EV manufacturing. With production and export planned from Gujarat, the facility is expected to:
- Lower EV component import dependency
- Support job creation and skill development
- Accelerate India’s target to achieve 30% EV penetration by 2030
According to company insiders, production is scheduled to ramp up in phases, with initial focus on meeting domestic demand before scaling exports.
Industry Impact
Analysts believe this launch could be a turning point for India’s EV market, given Maruti Suzuki’s widespread dealership network and cost-competitive manufacturing strengths.
“Maruti’s entry into EVs will democratize electric mobility in India. If they can price the e Vitara aggressively while maintaining global standards, it will challenge both homegrown and international rivals,” said an auto industry expert.
Looking Ahead
The official inauguration by PM Modi tomorrow will signal Maruti Suzuki’s readiness to join the global EV race from an Indian manufacturing base. The company aims not only to meet domestic aspirations for cleaner mobility but also to position India as a leading EV export hub.
With its strong battery infrastructure, premium design, and global reach, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara could be one of the most influential EV launches of 2025.
