Ecoreco launches lithium battery recycling project

The Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET), which is part of India’s Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), and the e-waste recycling business Eco Recycling (Ecoreco) have partnered to introduce a cost-effective lithium-ion battery recycling technology for the effective recovery of valuable elements from discarded li-ion batteries.

Together with the Telangana government and business partner Greenko Energies, CMET developed the lithium-ion battery recycling technology. With this technology, several types of abandoned Li-ion batteries can be processed, with more than 95% of the lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni) contents being recovered in the form of their corresponding oxides or carbonates with a purity of over 98%.

“With this innovative technology now at their disposal, Ecoreco is primed to recover valuable elements such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, and more from Li-ion Batteries. This achievement marks a significant departure from the previous practice of exporting the black mass for element recovery. Instead, India is poised to develop its own capacity for retaining these precious metals, contributing to the nation’s self-reliance and promoting the manufacturing of new products within the country,” stated Ecoreco.

In a report released by JMK Research, the market for lithium-ion batteries in India is predicted to expand significantly over the following five years. The market for lithium-ion batteries is projected to increase at an astounding annual rate of 37.5%, reaching 132 GWh in 2030. The total market volume is anticipated to grow from 2.9 GWh in 2018 to almost 800 GWh in 2030.
