Ghaziabad is set to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with the planned installation of 50 new charging stations at government offices, public parking facilities and major roads. The initiative is part of the first phase of the central government’s PM E-Drive scheme, aimed at supporting electric mobility and expanding public charging access across India.
According to reports, a total of 238 locations across Uttar Pradesh have been approved for EV charging infrastructure under the programme. The expansion is expected to make charging more accessible for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars and other eligible vehicles, depending on the space and facilities available at individual locations.
Government Offices and Public Parking to Get Charging Facilities
The proposed charging stations will be developed at selected government premises, public parking areas and important road corridors. By using these locations, authorities aim to integrate EV charging into everyday travel and make the facilities more convenient for residents, commuters and commercial vehicle operators.
Ashok Kumar Srivastava, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (Administration), said the charging stations would receive electricity through the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) network. Private land may also be considered for installations, subject to the required information being shared with the transport department before infrastructure development.
The space available at each site will determine the type of vehicles that can use the charging facilities. Reported space requirements include approximately 12 square metres for a car, six square metres for a two-wheeler or three-wheeler, and 105 square metres for an electric bus. Additional space will be needed for electrical equipment, including transformers and distribution panels.
PM E-Drive to Support Uttar Pradesh’s EV Infrastructure
The PM E-Drive scheme is intended to accelerate electric mobility by supporting the development of essential infrastructure and encouraging wider EV adoption. The proposed installations in Ghaziabad form part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader effort to improve charging availability.
Under the reported arrangement, participating government departments will make designated land available for a period of 10 years. The charging stations are expected to remain accessible to the public around the clock, with entry to the premises provided free of charge. However, free entry does not necessarily mean that electricity or charging services will be free.
The arrangement also includes a provision for government departments to receive a revenue share of ₹1 per unit of electricity consumed at the charging stations.
Rising EV Numbers Increase Demand for Charging
Ghaziabad has witnessed substantial electric vehicle adoption, particularly in the two-wheeler and electric rickshaw segments. According to figures cited in the report, the city has more than 70,000 registered EVs, including 39,415 electric rickshaws, 17,856 electric two-wheelers, 7,143 electric three-wheelers, 4,578 electric four-wheelers and 59 electric buses.
The city currently has around 40 EV charging stations, highlighting the need for further infrastructure as the number of electric vehicles grows.
A Step Towards Cleaner Urban Mobility
The addition of charging stations could help address charging-access concerns, improve convenience for EV owners and support the transition towards cleaner transportation. A stronger public charging network may also benefit fleet operators and businesses that depend on electric vehicles for daily operations.
As implementation progresses, the availability of confirmed locations, charger specifications and operational timelines will be important for users. The planned expansion represents another step towards building a more accessible EV ecosystem in Ghaziabad and supporting Uttar Pradesh’s wider electric mobility ambitions.
