India Gears Up for Critical Mineral Mission in 2025: A Race Towards Green Energy Dominance

New Delhi: India is poised to embark on a transformative journey in the critical and strategic minerals sector in 2025 with the launch of its ambitious National Critical Mineral Mission. This ambitious initiative aims to secure a sustainable supply of vital minerals crucial for the country’s green energy transition and burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing industry.

  • A Multi-pronged Strategy:
  • Addressing the Global Demand:
  • A Whole-of-Government Approach:
  • Looking Ahead:

Recognizing the critical role of these minerals in powering the 21st-century economy, the Indian government has prioritized a collaborative approach, uniting ministries, industry leaders, research institutions, and global think tanks to address the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented by this burgeoning sector.

A Multi-pronged Strategy:

The Critical Mineral Mission will encompass a multifaceted strategy:

  • Domestic Exploration and Production: The government has already initiated a series of auctions, successfully selling 24 critical and strategic mineral blocks in four rounds. The focus now shifts to expediting the mining process for successful bidders, ensuring a smooth transition from exploration to production.
  • International Collaborations: India is actively pursuing international collaborations and investments. High-profile roadshows abroad are planned to attract foreign investment and explore potential partnerships for resource acquisition. The government is also considering acquiring critical mineral assets in countries like Australia, strategically positioning itself in the global mining landscape.
  • Technological Innovation: The Mission will prioritize research and development in areas such as mineral exploration, extraction, and processing technologies. Fostering innovation in areas like battery technology and recycling will be crucial to enhance resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
  • Sustainable Practices: The government will emphasize sustainable mining practices, minimizing environmental impact and ensuring responsible resource extraction. This includes implementing robust environmental regulations and promoting the use of green technologies in mining operations.

Addressing the Global Demand:

The World Bank estimates that global mineral production, particularly for critical minerals like lithium and cobalt, will need to increase by nearly 500% by 2050 to meet the surging demand for clean energy technologies. This escalating demand underscores the urgency and strategic importance of India’s Critical Mineral Mission.

A Whole-of-Government Approach:

Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao emphasized the collaborative nature of the Mission, highlighting the need for a “whole-of-government approach” where ministries, industry, research institutions, and other stakeholders work in unison. This collaborative effort will be crucial to navigate the complexities of the global mineral market and ensure the successful implementation of the Mission’s objectives.

Looking Ahead:

The year 2025 is poised to be a landmark year for India’s mineral sector. The launch of the Critical Mineral Mission marks a significant step towards securing the nation’s energy future and establishing India as a key player in the global green energy transition. By embracing a collaborative approach, fostering innovation, and prioritizing sustainable practices, India can successfully navigate the challenges and capitalize on the immense opportunities presented by the critical minerals sector.
