Chandigarh Administration to Set Up India’s First Fully Solar-Powered EV Charging Station at IT Park, Advancing the City’s Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility Goals
In a landmark step towards green mobility, Chandigarh is set to establish India’s first solar-powered EV charging station, capable of generating 500 kilowatts (KW) of clean energy to charge electric vehicles (EVs) directly from the sun. The project marks a national first, seamlessly integrating solar power with EV charging infrastructure.
The initiative, led by the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST), aims to reduce dependency on the conventional electricity grid and promote sustainable urban transport. Located near the IT Park, close to DT Mall on the Chandigarh-Panchkula border, the new charging hub will feature a six-gun charging station powered entirely by solar panels.
₹3.8 Crore Project to Boost Green Infrastructure
According to CREST officials, the project involves an investment of ₹3.8 crore and the installation of a new 500-KW solar setup. The generated power will be dedicated exclusively to EV charging, setting a precedent for other Indian cities aiming to transition to renewable-powered mobility.
Currently, all EV charging stations in Chandigarh receive power from the electricity department, but this will be the first facility to operate solely on solar energy. The IT Park already houses a 1-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, which will be expanded with the additional 500 KW capacity to support the EV hub.
“This will be the first charging station to run completely on solar power, making it both cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable,” said a senior CREST official.
Round-the-Clock Charging with Battery Storage
To ensure uninterrupted charging even after sunset, the station will include a dedicated battery energy storage system (BESS). The system will store excess solar energy generated during the day, ensuring 24/7 charging availability for EV users.
CREST officials confirmed that a tender will soon be floated to select a private operator responsible for running the facility. The agency will finalize operational terms, conditions, and consumer tariffs once the bidding process concludes.
Accelerating EV Adoption in Chandigarh
Chandigarh has emerged as one of India’s leading cities in EV adoption, thanks to its proactive green mobility initiatives. The solar-powered EV hub at IT Park is expected to set a benchmark for sustainable urban infrastructure, combining clean energy generation with next-generation mobility solutions. With this innovative project, Chandigarh is poised to become a model for renewable-powered EV charging, driving India’s transition to a cleaner, carbon-neutral future.
