Covestro, BYD join hands to develop advanced materials for EVs, energy storage

Covestro and BYD have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a long-term strategic partnership focused on developing advanced material solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), power batteries, energy storage systems, and next-generation technologies. The collaboration marks a shift from a conventional supplier-customer relationship to joint innovation aimed at improving the performance, sustainability, and scalability of future mobility solutions.

Under the agreement, Covestro will contribute its expertise in polycarbonate and polyurethane materials, dedicated research and development resources, supply assurance, early access to new material innovations, and customized technical support. In return, BYD will involve Covestro in upcoming product programmes and technology roadmaps across its expanding automotive and energy businesses.

The partnership covers multiple application areas, including new energy vehicles, power batteries, public transportation, energy storage, and advanced technology platforms. The companies will jointly explore material innovations that improve lightweight construction, thermal management, structural durability, electrical performance, and safety—critical requirements for next-generation EVs and battery systems. The agreement also includes opportunities for technology co-development and strategic investments.

Beyond product development, both companies have committed to advancing low-carbon and circular material solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of mobility and energy technologies. The collaboration aligns with Covestro’s sustainability strategy while supporting BYD’s expanding global manufacturing ambitions. As EV manufacturers continue to prioritise lighter, safer, and more sustainable vehicles, material innovation is becoming a key competitive differentiator across the industry
