Uno Minda to develop electric 4-wheeler powertrain components, boosting India’s EV industry.
In a major push for India’s electric mobility ambitions, Uno Minda Limited has approved a significant ₹423 crore investment to develop and manufacture high-voltage electric powertrain components for four-wheeler passenger and commercial vehicles. This marks a pivotal expansion in the company’s electric vehicle strategy and positions it firmly within the EV supply chain for India’s growing four-wheeler market.
The announcement came following a board meeting on April 30, 2025, where the company’s directors cleared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new joint venture initiative under the umbrella of Uno Minda Auto Innovations Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary.
🔋 A Powerful Partnership for High-Voltage Powertrains
The joint venture includes collaboration with:
- Suzhou Inovance Automotive Co. Ltd. (China)
- Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Inovance Automotive (HK) Investment Co. Ltd.
- Once approved by regulators, Inovance will hold a 30% equity stake, while Uno Minda will maintain a 70% controlling interest, investing the majority share over the next three years. Until regulatory nods are in place, Uno Minda retains 100% control of the JV company.
⚙️ Project Highlights:
- Total Investment: ₹423 crore
- Products: High-voltage EV components including e-axles, inverters, motors, and combined charging units
- Capacity Target: 203,043 units annually
- Production Start: Q2 of FY 2026–27
- Capacity Ramp-Up: Fully operational by the third year
- Funding Mix: Equity + term loans
- This investment comes at a time when India’s EV market is rapidly scaling, with both passenger and commercial EV segments seeing heightened interest and policy support. Importantly, Uno Minda currently has no existing production capacity for these powertrain products, making this project a strategic leap into an entirely new segment.
As India pushes toward electrification across all vehicle segments, domestic capability in core EV components such as motors and inverters is critical. Uno Minda’s project stands to reduce import dependency, support OEMs with localized solutions, and strengthen India’s position in the global EV supply chain.
This move also complements the broader national narrative of building a self-reliant EV manufacturing ecosystem, especially for high-voltage components that are essential to 4W performance and range efficiency.
