Company Transitions Diesel Buses to Electric for Transporting Calcine to Chittorgarh Smelter, Cutting Scope 3 Emissions and Ensuring Cleaner Workforce Commute”

In a significant step toward sustainable industrial operations, Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) has introduced a fleet of 40 electric bulkers at its Zinc Smelter Debari facility in Udaipur. The deployment is in partnership with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Ltd and is aimed at transporting calcine, a by-product of the roasting process, to HZL’s zinc-lead smelter in Chittorgarh under an eight-year logistics contract.

The first batch of 10 electric bulkers has already begun operations, with the remaining vehicles set to join the fleet in the coming months. This initiative forms a key part of Hindustan Zinc’s strategy to decarbonise its operations and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.

The company, which already uses LNG and battery-powered trucks, has been integrating renewable energy and energy-efficiency measures across its production and logistics processes. Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said, “We are embedding sustainability into the core of our logistics strategy to build a clean, connected, and future-ready ecosystem. These electric mobility solutions not only reduce our carbon footprint but also enhance operational efficiency, workforce safety, and long-term value.”

In addition to electric bulkers, HZL has signed a memorandum of understanding with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility to deploy electric buses for employee transport at Zinc Smelter Debari. The shift from diesel-powered buses to electric vehicles is expected to cut Scope 3 emissions while providing a safer and cleaner commuting option for employees.

This move reinforces Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to green industrial growth and highlights the growing trend of electrification in heavy-duty logistics and industrial transport in India. By adopting electric mobility solutions, HZL aims to set a benchmark for sustainable practices in the mining and metals sector, supporting the country’s broader EV and climate goals.

What Happened: JBM Auto’s arm has secured ₹750 crore in funding from Motilal Oswal to support the expansion of its electric bus rollout. The capital is expected to strengthen fleet deployment and execution capacity as India’s e-bus market scales up. The Key Number: ₹750 crore. Why It Matters: This is a strong financing signal for India’s electric bus ecosystem, where large upfront costs often slow deployment. Fresh funding can accelerate production, procurement, and route expansion for clean public transport.
