India Expands Green Logistics: EV Charging Infrastructure to be Installed at Ports

In a significant push towards sustainable mobility, India is set to enhance its port infrastructure by installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This move, part of the broader green logistics initiative, aligns with India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate EV adoption across the country.

Strategic Expansion of EV Charging at Ports

The Union Heavy Industries Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, is identifying key locations across major ports for setting up EV charging stations, according to officials familiar with the development. This initiative falls under the ambitious ₹10,900-crore PM E-Drive scheme, designed to boost EV infrastructure and support India’s transition to clean energy.

As part of the scheme, the government has allocated ₹2,000 crore for nationwide EV charging infrastructure. A dedicated ₹500 crore has been set aside to subsidize electric trucks, recognizing their growing role in port logistics and commercial transportation.

Electrification of Port Operations

Ports play a crucial role in India’s trade ecosystem, with thousands of trucks, forklifts, and tugs operating daily. The installation of EV charging stations will support the electrification of two key vehicle categories at ports:

  • Ground operations vehicles: Forklifts, tugs, and other port machinery can transition to electric power with sufficient charging infrastructure.
  • Cargo and commercial trucks: As part of the PM E-Drive scheme, electric trucks used for cargo transport will benefit from dedicated port charging stations.

Trucks are a vital component of port logistics, transporting goods to and from port premises. Electrifying this sector will not only reduce emissions but also lower operational costs in the long run.

Strengthening Port Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future

The push for EV charging infrastructure coincides with the Indian government’s massive port expansion plans. For instance, work has begun on Maharashtra’s Vadhawan Port, which is set to become the largest in India with a cargo handling capacity of nearly 300 million metric tonnes. The ₹76,220 crore project is expected to enhance trade efficiency and reduce congestion at existing ports.

Additionally, the government is prioritizing better road connectivity to ports. A new six-lane highway in Maharashtra, connecting the hinterlands to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), has been approved to ease cargo movement and facilitate seamless logistics.

India’s Commitment to Net-Zero Emissions

The electrification of port vehicles is a crucial step in reducing India’s carbon footprint and achieving the nation’s target of becoming a net-zero emission economy by 2070. The initiative at ports follows similar efforts in other key infrastructure areas, such as highways and airports. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has been working with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to install EV charging stations at strategic locations nationwide.

As India continues to prioritize sustainable growth, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure at ports marks another milestone in the country’s journey towards cleaner, more efficient transportation systems.
