Montra Electric, the clean mobility arm of the Murugappa Group, has expanded its electric truck portfolio with the launch of the Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT. The company also introduced battery swapping technology for its Rhino range, aiming to boost operational efficiency for heavy-duty fleets.

The launch took place at Montra Electric’s eM&HCV facility in Manesar, alongside the inauguration of India’s first all-women monitored automated battery plant and a new conveyor line integrated with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), marking significant progress in automation and localisation.

The event was attended by M.A.M. Arunachalam (Arun Murugappan), Chairman, and Vellayan Subbiah, Vice-Chairman, Montra Electric, highlighting the company’s commitment to India’s emerging electric freight market. The launch builds on the success of Montra’s first heavy-duty e-truck, the 6×4 TT, which has clocked over 1.2 crore km within two years of its debut.

Battery Swapping System

Montra Electric’s new battery swapping system enables a full battery exchange in under six minutes, drastically reducing downtime compared to conventional fast charging, which typically takes over an hour. Designed with a 7+1 configuration, the system can handle up to 160 swaps per day, supporting hundreds of trucks in operation.

Arun Murugappan, Chairman, Montra Electric, said, “With innovations like battery swapping for heavy-duty trucks and purpose-built platforms, we are making clean mobility seamless, reliable, and economically viable for fleet operators. This approach strengthens our vision of building a full-spectrum sustainable mobility ecosystem.”
