The Number: The highest claimed range currently stands at 683 km (ARAI-certified) from the Mahindra BE 6 equipped with a 79 kWh battery pack.

The Impact: Long-range electric SUVs are becoming critical for India’s next EV adoption phase, especially for buyers transitioning from ICE SUVs who remain concerned about charging infrastructure and highway usability.

The Core News

The Indian EV market is witnessing a strong shift toward electric mid-size SUVs, a segment now emerging as the practical bridge between urban EV adoption and long-distance electric mobility. The focus is no longer only on affordability or city commuting. Buyers are increasingly prioritising usable driving range, battery efficiency, charging speed, and platform capability. This is where the latest generation of born-electric SUVs from Mahindra and newer global entrants like VinFast are reshaping the segment.

The current range leader is the Mahindra BE 6, delivering an ARAI-certified 683 km range with its larger 79 kWh battery configuration. Built on Mahindra’s INGLO EV architecture, the SUV uses a rear-wheel-drive layout and BYD-sourced blade-cell battery technology. Its positioning reflects a larger industry trend where dedicated EV platforms are enabling better energy density, improved aerodynamics, and larger battery integration compared to converted ICE platforms.

At the same time, global EV manufacturer VinFast is accelerating its India strategy through products like the VinFast VF7. Depending on variant, the VF7 offers claimed ranges between 438 km and 532 km alongside dual-motor AWD options and Level-2 ADAS capability. VinFast’s India push signals rising international interest in India’s premium EV SUV market, which is increasingly becoming competitive beyond Tata Motors and Mahindra.

Breaking Down the Update

• The Mahindra BE 6 currently offers the highest claimed range among mainstream electric SUVs in India at 683 km.

• Mahindra’s INGLO architecture is helping the company compete directly with global EV-native platforms.

• VinFast has entered India with aggressive EV expansion plans including the VF6, VF7, and VF MPV 7 lineup.

• Larger battery packs between 59 kWh and 79 kWh are becoming standard in premium electric SUV segments.

• Long-range capability is emerging as a primary buying criterion due to India’s uneven charging infrastructure coverage.

• Most new-generation electric SUVs now include Level-2 ADAS, fast charging support, connected vehicle tech, and panoramic cabin-focused designs.

• The market is gradually shifting from converted ICE EVs toward born-electric architectures for better efficiency and packaging.

How electric mid-size SUVs with longest range will help Indian EV Market

The rise of electric mid-size SUVs with longest range could significantly accelerate mainstream EV adoption in India. One of the largest barriers for Indian buyers remains range anxiety, particularly for consumers upgrading from diesel SUVs used for intercity and highway travel. Higher-range EVs directly address this concern by making long-distance mobility more practical without frequent charging interruptions.

Vehicles like the Mahindra BE 6 and VinFast VF7 demonstrate how larger battery packs and dedicated EV platforms can deliver both performance and usability. This is important because Indian SUV buyers increasingly expect versatility, high ground clearance, spacious cabins, and strong highway capability alongside electrification.

The emergence of electric mid-size SUVs with longest range will also push charging infrastructure growth. As more long-range EVs enter highways and tier-2 markets, demand for ultra-fast charging corridors and reliable DC charging networks will increase. This creates opportunities for energy companies, charge point operators, and state-level EV infrastructure policies.

Additionally, competition from international players like VinFast could accelerate technology adoption, localisation efforts, and pricing pressure within the Indian EV ecosystem. Over the next few years, this segment may become the most commercially important category in India’s passenger EV market

Way Forward …

The battle for dominance in India’s electric SUV segment is now shifting toward efficiency, range, platform engineering, and charging capability rather than simply launch volume. As more manufacturers introduce born-electric SUVs, electric mid-size SUVs with longest range are likely to become the benchmark category for India’s premium EV transition. The next phase to watch will be execution — including charging infrastructure expansion, localisation levels, battery sourcing, and real-world efficiency performance.
