The Number: 21 million EVs sold globally in 2025, representing one in every four passenger vehicles sold worldwide. China alone contributed over 13 million EV sales.

The Impact: The acceleration highlights how China continues to dominate global EV manufacturing and consumption, while Europe and the US face slower but steady electrification growth. Emerging markets are becoming the next strategic battleground for EV expansion.

The Core News

The global electric mobility sector crossed another major threshold in 2025 as EVs accounted for roughly one-quarter of all passenger vehicle sales worldwide. According to the latest International Energy Agency (IEA) data highlighted by Statista, global electric car sales surpassed 21 million units last year, more than doubling volumes recorded in 2022.

China remained the undisputed center of the global EV ecosystem. The country recorded more than 13 million electric vehicle sales in 2025, representing nearly 60% of worldwide EV demand. Strong domestic competition, aggressive manufacturing scale, falling battery costs, and government-backed industrial policy continue to strengthen China’s lead across both EV production and consumption.

Meanwhile, Europe and the United States continued expanding their EV markets, although at a slower pace compared to China. Policy adjustments, subsidy reductions, and infrastructure challenges affected adoption momentum in several Western markets. However, the broader trend remains firmly upward as automakers continue investing heavily in electrification platforms, charging ecosystems, and localized battery supply chains. Emerging economies in Asia and Latin America are also beginning to show faster EV adoption rates, signaling the next wave of global market expansion.

Way Forward ..

The milestone that One in Four Cars Sold Globally Is an Electric Vehicle confirms that electrification is no longer an early-stage automotive transition. The next phase will be defined by charging infrastructure expansion, battery supply localization, trade policy shifts, and affordability in emerging economies.
