Survey for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Noida’s Residential Complexes
In a significant move towards promoting electric mobility, the Noida district administration has instructed UPPCL (Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited) and NPCL (Noida Power Company Limited) to carry out a comprehensive survey in residential societies for establishing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This initiative aims to ensure a smoother transition to electric vehicles in Noida, one of the fastest-growing urban centers in India.
Key Highlights of the EV Charging Survey:
- Survey to Identify Suitable Locations: UPPCL and NPCL will soon begin a thorough survey to identify areas within residential societies where EV charging stations can be installed.
- Phased Development of Charging Stations: Based on the survey’s results, charging stations will be developed in a phased manner, ensuring proper infrastructure development across Noida.
- Collaboration with RWAs and AOAs: Power discoms have been asked to work closely with Apartment Owners’ Associations (AOAs) and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to facilitate the installation process and explain the government’s policy on EV charging points.
Challenges in Installing EV Charging Points
The rising number of electric vehicles in Noida has created a demand for more charging stations, but installation issues persist, particularly in group housing complexes. The survey initiative follows concerns about space availability and proper infrastructure in older societies.
- Increased EV Demand, Limited Infrastructure: The surge in electric vehicles has been met with a lack of sufficient charging stations, particularly in older residential buildings.
- Older Societies Struggling with EV Readiness: Many older buildings were not designed with EV charging in mind and often lack designated guest parking or necessary electrical infrastructure.
Surojit Dasgupta, President of Exotica Fresco AOA and Secretary of the Noida Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (NOFAA), welcomed the survey but emphasized the urgency of having clear administrative guidelines for private and public installations. “We are ready to support EV installations wherever possible, but we need clear and legal guidelines to move forward,” he said.
Ensuring Safety and Compliance with EV Charging Installations
As Noida progresses towards creating a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure, safety remains a top priority.
- Safety Standards for EV Charging Points: Ramesh Chaudhary, an official from the Electrical Safety Department, stressed the importance of adhering to technical and safety standards for both public and private charging stations.
- Risk of Fire Hazards: Improperly installed EV chargers can pose serious fire risks, especially in densely populated residential complexes. Safety checklists will be issued during the survey phase to ensure compliance with necessary norms.
Noida ADM Issues Final Warning on Unregistered Lifts
In a separate but related move, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) also issued a final warning to residential societies operating unregistered lifts, stating that legal action will be taken against defaulters after May 15.
