Delhi EV Ambitions: Hampered by Charging Challenges
Delhi has been beating the drum that it is the electric vehicle capital of India, espousing its tremendous growth in terms of its charging infrastructure. The government claimed the count of charging points increased from 4,700 to 18,000 in two years. An investigation launched by TOI has revealed otherwise.
Even many of the installed charging stations by PSUs or power distribution companies remain non-functional at prominent places like Connaught Place, despite claims by the government. Such a chasm between the rhetoric of the government and ground reality exposes the real effect of Delhi’s EV initiatives.
Delhi’s EV Charging Infrastructure: A Charging Challenge
The very ambitious EV ambitions of Delhi are absolutely sullied due to its utterly dismal charging infrastructure. Even the high-profile charging station at the new Parliament building complex has been left to ruin.
The six-dock charging station on Rafi Marg, which was inaugurated in July 2020, is now useless with its wires missing. In Connaught Place, several EV charging stations are out of order with their wires cut or guns missing. Many of these stations continue to remain on maps as well as on EV charging station locator apps as functional. However, in reality, they are either non-functional or the place has been used for some other purposes.
The situation is particularly concerning given Delhi’s effort at promoting electric mobility. Far from the truth are the claims made by the government about having a robust charging infrastructure. This indeed exposes the flaw in Delhi’s EV initiatives and the need for urgent remedial action. The part of the government in setting right the deficiencies in the charging infrastructure.
The Reality Behind Delhi’s EV Charging Infrastructure
Furthermore, if there is a lack of reliable and accessible charging infrastructure, it will deter potential EV customers. If the drivers cannot rely on the availability of charging stations to refuel their vehicles, they may not be ready to invest in electric vehicles. This will obstruct the expansion of the EV market in Delhi. To undermine the efforts to minimize pollution and improve air quality within the city.
A recent survey showed that 88% of EV owners in Delhi are highly concerned about finding accessible, safe, working charging stations. The second major reason deterring the switch from fuel-based vehicles to electric mobility is related to inadequate EV infrastructure.
One expert commented that this problem is already felt in the market, wherein many charging stations, when located on maps and apps, are actually nonoperational. While this is a drawback to EV adoption, the government responded with several measures to address the situation.
Delhi’s EV Charging Infrastructure: A Work in Progress
According to Archit Fursule of Climate Trends, some of the examples have to do with the expansion of the charging station network, enforcement of stricter maintenance rules, and providing incentives for building infrastructures. Industry measures like eHUB by MG Motors and Universal EV Charging App further justify collective effort toward better accessibility and reliability of EV charging infrastructure.
“However, it is still a problem,” she said. “The revised guidelines speak of making interoperability mandatory, which is like a universal charger. This could go some distance to resolve this problem. Though the defunct stations are an issue and it could impact the market for a while, in the longer run, it will finally work.”

She cited how during the changeover to CNG in 1999, there were interminable queues outside CNG stations. So, she reasoned, whenever there’s a tech change, there are some initial problems.
