The Number: 190+ recycling and logistics sites across Europe supporting battery collection and processing.

The Impact: The collaboration strengthens Europe’s battery material security while reducing dependence on imported critical minerals.

The Core News

The TSR Group BASF EV battery recycling partnership signals a structural shift in Europe’s approach to battery circularity. The collaboration focuses on building an integrated recycling chain for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, covering dismantling, discharge, and conversion into “black mass”—a critical intermediate for material recovery.

At an operational level, TSR brings upstream capabilities through its Battery Lifecycle Company (BLC) joint venture, handling safe dismantling and logistics of used batteries. BASF, on the other hand, anchors the downstream process with its black mass production facility in Schwarz Heide, Germany, enabling reintegration of recovered materials into new battery production.

Strategically, the partnership aims to “close the loop” on battery metals within Europe. This is not just about recycling efficiency—it directly ties into industrial competitiveness, supply chain resilience, and geopolitical risk reduction as EV demand accelerates across the region.

Breaking Down the Update

• Focus on end-to-end EV battery recycling—from dismantling to black mass production
• TSR contributes logistics network and metal processing expertise
• BASF integrates recycled materials into cathode active materials (CAM) supply chain
• Over 190 sites enable large-scale battery collection and processing
• Expansion of Europe’s closed-loop battery ecosystem
• Additional collaboration planned in logistics and waste-stream metal recovery

Way Forward….

The TSR Group BASF EV battery recycling partnership reflects Europe’s urgency to localize battery material supply and build a circular EV ecosystem. The next phase will depend on execution—scaling logistics, improving recovery yields, and aligning with EU battery regulations. If delivered effectively, this model could become the blueprint for large-scale EV battery recycling globally.
