The Number: The project involves an investment of ₹550 crore, with commissioning targeted for Q2 FY28.

The Impact: The new Uno Minda EV powertrain plant strengthens India’s localisation push in advanced EV drivetrain technologies while expanding domestic manufacturing capability for electric and hybrid passenger vehicles.Uno Minda EV powertrain plant in Maharashtra will manufacture EDUs and DHT systems with ₹550 crore investment by Q2 FY28.

The Core News

The new Uno Minda EV powertrain plant marks another major investment into India’s fast-expanding electric mobility supply chain. Uno Minda has approved the establishment of a greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, through its subsidiary Uno Minda Auto Innovations Private Limited (UMAIPL). The facility will focus on manufacturing and assembly of high-voltage electric powertrain systems for four-wheeler passenger vehicles.

The proposed facility will manufacture Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) systems, two critical technologies increasingly becoming central to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range-extended EVs (REEVs). The company confirmed that the expansion is backed by fresh orders from an anchor customer, indicating rising OEM demand for localized EV drivetrain systems in India.

This is Uno Minda’s second EV powertrain manufacturing announcement within a short period. The company is already setting up another EV-focused facility at Khed City near Pune, expected to begin operations in H2 FY27. The dual-facility strategy indicates that component suppliers are preparing for higher electrification volumes across India’s passenger vehicle market as OEMs gradually expand both hybrid and EV portfolios.

How Uno Minda EV powertrain plant will help Indian EV Market

The Uno Minda EV powertrain plant could significantly improve India’s domestic EV component manufacturing ecosystem, especially in the high-voltage drivetrain segment where localisation levels are still evolving. India currently depends heavily on imported EV subsystems including motors, inverters, transmission systems, and integrated drive units. Facilities like this can reduce that dependence while strengthening the domestic supply chain.

Electric Drive Units (EDUs) combine multiple powertrain components into integrated systems that improve efficiency, packaging, and vehicle performance. Local manufacturing of these systems can help Indian OEMs reduce costs, improve supply security, and accelerate product development timelines. Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) systems are also expected to become increasingly relevant as hybrid vehicle adoption rises in the Indian market.

The investment also aligns with the broader industry transition toward diversified electrification technologies rather than only battery EVs. As automakers explore hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended platforms for Indian consumers, localised drivetrain manufacturing becomes strategically important.

Beyond production capacity, the project may also support skill development, supplier ecosystem expansion, and technology transfer within India’s automotive manufacturing sector. If executed efficiently, the Uno Minda EV powertrain plant could become part of the larger push toward building India into a globally competitive EV component manufacturing hub.

Conclusion & Next Steps

The establishment of the Uno Minda EV powertrain plant reflects how India’s auto component sector is repositioning itself for the next phase of vehicle electrification. The key area to watch now will be execution timelines, customer expansion beyond the anchor OEM, and the company’s ability to scale localized high-voltage technologies competitively. As EV and hybrid adoption grows, suppliers capable of manufacturing advanced drivetrain systems domestically may gain a stronger strategic position within India’s evolving mobility market.
